How protocol optimization is transforming media workflows when every second counts
IBC, the International Broadcasting Convention, stands as Europe’s premier media and entertainment technology event, bringing together over 50,000 professionals from across the global content creation ecosystem. Held annually at Amsterdam’s RAI, IBC serves as the definitive showcase for innovation that drives the future of media production, from broadcast television to streaming platforms, from live sports to virtual production.
For Tuxera, IBC2025 marked our debut at this influential gathering, and our presence on stand 5.D78 showcased not just our breakthrough performance achievements with Fusion SMB, but the growing ecosystem of partnerships that are redefining what’s possible in high-performance media workflows. The timing proved perfect. As the industry grapples with 8K adoption, AI-driven workflows, and cloud-hybrid production models, the infrastructure foundations that enable creative excellence have never been more critical.
The industry got its first glimpse of Tuxera’s SMB over QUIC technology in development – a game-changing advancement that combines the reliability of SMB with QUIC’s inherent security and performance benefits. This preview demonstrated how organizations can achieve VPN-like security without the complexity, making secure file access seamless across hybrid cloud environments.
As Enterprise Storage Technical Officer Ned Pyle explains in the detailed technical blog he wrote recently: “SMB over QUIC adds security and connectivity to cloud computing and storage platforms. Because QUIC is just a different transport, applications and users require no new code or training.”
The technology addresses critical pain points for media organizations working across distributed teams and cloud-hybrid deployments, where traditional networking constraints often limit creativity and collaboration. With QUIC’s always-on encryption and UDP-based architecture, content creators can maintain security standards without sacrificing the real-time performance that modern productions demand.
Duncan Beattie, Tuxera’s Market Development Manager, joined industry experts Aymeric Legal from Kaltura and David Colantuoni from Storj for a crucial discussion on “AI production workflows and their implication for storage” at IBC’s Content Everywhere panel Sunday morning at the show.
The panel, moderated by Stephen Stewart from IET Media Technical Network, explored how artificial intelligence is reshaping content creation workflows – from ideation through to distribution. Duncan’s key insight resonated strongly with the audience: “Make sure you really understand what you want to do with AI. As a company grows, understanding where AI’s going to fit in their production workflows, to help them monetize and give the best service to their clients, involves considering resources, capacity, hardware, and workflows.”
This perspective reflects a broader industry reality: whilst AI tools are revolutionizing creative possibilities, the infrastructure supporting these workflows must evolve simultaneously. Storage architectures designed for traditional linear workflows often struggle with the dynamic, data-intensive demands of AI-driven production.
The companies that thrive will be those preparing their infrastructure now for the AI revolution in media production, ensuring that protocol performance doesn’t become the limiting factor when creative ambition meets computational reality.
The technical demonstrations at IBC showcased performance levels that directly address industry pain points. Recent engineering advances have pushed Mac workflows to 8.6GB/s from a single 100GbE port, more than double what open-source alternatives achieve, whilst Windows clients with SMB over RDMA can achieve 11.3GB/s per port with linear performance scaling.
These breakthrough numbers matter because they represent the difference between creative teams waiting for infrastructure and infrastructure that enables creativity. As highlighted in recent industry analysis of cloud production scaling barriers and sports broadcasting transformation, protocol bottlenecks remain a critical challenge. When managing multiple 4K feeds, real-time graphics, and instant multi-platform delivery, even small protocol limitations become critical failure points during peak production moments.
The traditional approach of accepting these limitations and building workarounds – proxy workflows, overnight transfers, reduced resolution editing – becomes unnecessary when the protocol itself performs as it should.
The conversations at IBC2025 reinforced that the best partnerships aren’t just about technical integration, they’re about enabling creative professionals to focus on storytelling rather than wrestling with infrastructure limitations.
The growing momentum behind our partner ecosystem reflects a fundamental shift in how the industry approaches infrastructure challenges. Storage specialists, system integrators, and technology partners increasingly recognize that optimizing the protocol layer unlocks the full potential of their hardware investments. These partnerships deliver measurable productivity gains that directly impact bottom-line performance for content creators working against unforgiving deadlines.
As we continue developing SMB over QUIC toward production release by year-end, and as our partner ecosystem with industry leaders like Quantum, Pixitmedia by DataCore, and ATTO Technology continues to evolve, one thing becomes clear: the future belongs to those who understand that creative excellence demands infrastructure excellence.
